there was a post here a few days ago about an oil pan, someone posted up an epoxy repair kit, seems like a good choice for your issue. I would post a link but that is above my pay grade.

Also, be sure you cover up or stuff rags in or around to prevent metal shavings from going somewhere you don't want them to go.
Bring the bolt with you, and they will size you up to what you need.
Pooh Bah thanks. ''Twas an Excellent tip.
So I go today to auto zone and ask for a 1/4 20 time sert kit. Deer in the headlights look he gives me....ut oh I say to myself.

I say "you know...a thread insert kit for stripped threads" ...he lights up and dashes from behind the register, down an isle, back up behind the register in about 6 seconds! He has a helicoil kit.......

I didn't even ask again about the time sert kit. His eyes told me just go with the helicoil kit. I figured someone was looking out for me to save me 50 bucks so what the hell. Helicoil it was.

I came home, watched a few you tube installs and in about 15 minutes I was done. Derby cover reinstalled and all screws torqued to 108 inch lbs. mission accomplished. Thank you and all very much.

Derby cover isn't a high torque item anyway and definitely not made of Tin or steel... lol

Think I would prefer to go have the hole welded up, drill and tap for a permanent fix though.
True that! Thanks lp

Yes, Knuckles and Pans were stamped steel covers. (And everything else before that as far as I know.)

Yup I'm embarrassed. Been riding 30 years but never really did any real maintenance. Lots of component swaps. Motor work went to the dealer...still does. Lol....When I stripped out this bolt hole i damn near had a panic attack.
Thanks to u guys I learned something else.
