Default Rider backrest flop

Maybe I should just chalk this one up to experience, but I'm hoping the forum can help me out. I bought a Harley comfort stitch rider backrest off ebay and it looks like I got exactly what I paid for. I know rider backrests are designed to bend forward to allow easier access to the passenger seat, but this one also flops backwards. Can't tell if it's broken or if there is an adjustment somewhere that needs readjusting. Anybody ever run into this before?

The backrest has nothing to do with it. It's your mount. OR........you missed the mounting slot entirely, the only other reason it would flop backwards. Put some tuna, and a little hair around it,and give it another shot.

Bends backwards......almost like there is a pin or stop missing. Bends forward just like it is supposed to, and snaps back like it's supposed to, but continues bending backwards past the upright position.

Don't think it's a mount problem. Whether it's in the mount or not, it shouldn't bend 90 degrees backwards. Not much of a backrest if it lays down backwards when you lean against it.

I would say the screw that sets the movement of the rest is missing. On the back of the cover is there a metal grommet, that looks like maybe a screwdriver fits through it? If so, when you look inside do you see the screw that the screwdriver would access? If yes to the grommet and no to the screw, than you now know the piece that is missing.

There is an allen adjuster on the back of the rest, through a tiny hole, tighten it. Hopefully it hasn't come out.

Even without the threaded screw/bolt, the backrest shouldn't bend back a full 90. Plate to plate should prevent this.

Here's the fix:

there are 2 bolts which hold the backrest to the "stem" and act as pivots points- these have nylon washers which wear.

snug them up.

a 7/16" wrench and I can't remember if the other end is an allen or a torx.
