Default rear shift lever removal

I hate the rear shift lever thing. Why is this thing even here?? Just takes up space.

I see kits to remove it but the cheapest I've found is 60 bucks and it looks like it's just a spacer.

Anyone removed their rear lever and have any idea what it takes? I'd rather go to home depot and spend like 5 bucks on a piece of black PVC pipe or something like that.

I don't know where you got 60 bucks for a simple spindle cover but you need to look elsewhere. I hate the rear lever myself and refuse to keep one on a bike. Here is one from eBay (although not crazy about it) and have nicer.

Take the rear off. Slide the front shift lever to outer edge (position where the rear lever used to be). Measure the gap, not including the oem rubber spacer already there. Then take the rubber from the rear shifter peg. Cut it to that size. Now you have a spacer that will work to eliminate the rear shift lever and looks kinda cool.

H-D also sells a folding rear shift lever, giving you more room on the board. I have one on mine but really don't use it folded a lot as I find I have enough room as it is normally, and usually have my feet part way on the highway pegs most of the time. However I use the rear lever for every upshift. After using it I cannot imagine ever going back to sticking my boot under a shift lever again.
