Things you don't ride without? / Holiday wish list items
#63
Wow.... Countless times. I carry in my bags H4 bulbs that have saved the day, Zip ties, Leatherman for loose battery cables, my brother carries this battery thing that has jump started half a dozen bikes (mine included). Allen wrenches for apes that came loose, a crescent wrenches for seats and foot pegs about to fall off. Even stupid $hit like spare sun glasses (legal eye protection) that gets lost at the bar, and gloves for that 90 mile ride in 40 degree weather. Oh yeah, if you ride with enough people, enough times, you better have stuff in your bags, or a trailer is inevitable. I don't care HOW new the bike is. Humans "F" UP.
edit: I see you have an Ironhead Sportster. Roadside repair HAVE to be something you are familiar with.
Back in my Ironhead days, HALF of one of my saddlebags was solely dedicated to tools and spare parts. HA!

I used to carry a set of allen wrenches. The short handled ones. Then on the way to Sturgis in the middle of nowhere the shifter link allen screw behind the primary wore out. Seems that mother Harley's son had forgotten to tighten it and after 20,000 it felt it had worn itself enough to jump the spline. Of course the bolt was toast. So setting it into third, I rode through the desert, through stop signs and even red lights until I came upon an ACE hardware. I found a replacement bolt, but you needed a long shaft 1/4" allen wrench. I finally fixed it, rode to Sturgis and 1/2 the West and learned the lesson. I carry long shaft allen wrenches, cause the one that is missed by mother Harley's son, is the same one missed by the dealer and by me, until now.
If you have not checked it, check that allen head on the rear spline of the shifting linkage. You just might save yourself an adventure.

This is about it for most several thousand mile trips.
Credit cards and cash.
Drivers License, registration and insurance.
HOG Roadside Ultimate.
National Parks Pass.
Ink Pen
Summer gloves and lined gauntlet gloves.
Leather overpants with waterproof liner, leather jacket with waterproof liner and warm liner, rain coat, day/night goggles, extra goggles, helmet, skull caps and bandanas.
Pants, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, socks, underwear and insulated underwear.
Riding boots, walking shoes and hat.

Flashlight, Harley tool, multi tool, zip ties, tape, pocket knife, light bulbs, fuses, multi-screwdriver, magnesium fire stick.

Tire kit with gas bottles. Tow to the nearest Harley shop was not an issue on the two flats I have had. I would consider using it in a remote location.
Tool bag with various small hand tools.
Cell phone with accessories.
Regular battery operated camera, gopro with accessories. Charging cords and adapters. A tablet is included only because I might need it for work.
Storage bags and stuff sacks.
Tent, inflatable sleeping pad and pillow, light sleeping bag and liner, micro-fiber towels and camp towel.
For certain trips the following additional camping gear is taken along.
Camp stove and fuel bottle. Coffee press, coffee grinder, coffee, utensils.

I have had a couple of shifters strip. The last time I made a really nice shifter linkage the Harley Tech was really proud of. Worked great.
