Thanks for the replies, I was kinda hoping that someone had a magical tip that would make it easier. If it had a removable caliper like the later models it would be so much easier, but, alas....

I use a small masonry trowel. Like one used for "pointing". Some where around a four inch. Stiffer than a puttty knife. Works great.
