Mine stay on year round, they actually direct more air into the motor for cooling, and you can open the vents for more cooling for you.

Only real heat problem I have had was last summer in VA on I-64. Got caught behind a accident and was doing the stop and go thing for about an hour(More duckwalk then anything) and the bike did get hot. ButI think the lowers off wouldn't of mattered even then.

On thing I would do is also install dragon wings so you could direct more air on you in the summer heat.
