Adjust Ultra Clutch

Adjust Ultra Clutch
While I had the primary off of my 2009 Ultra I thought it a good time to take up the adjustment slack in my clutch cable. I slid back the rubber boot and backed off almost an inch of free play. I removed my clutch lever and cleaned and greased it. There was a lot of slack in the cable at the lever. I backed off the clutch locking nut ant tried to screw in the center adjusting screw. The center adjustment screw would not go in at all. I removed the screw and looked in the hole and could see the mating piece. I ended up screwing out the inch of cable adjustment I had screw in earlier. I am back where I started. Anyone have any suggestions with an inch of free play in the cable the adjustment screw will not move in without opening the clutch plates?????

You should be turning the adjustment screw "out" a few turns then back in til it bottoms lightly. Then back it out 1/2 to 1 turn.
It's moving the clutch plates because it's already bottomed out and you're pushing the plates open with the adjustment screw.
I back off on the cable adjustment til the lever hits the left grip, but I don't know if that much slack is necessary or not. Just the way I've always done it.
Make sure the engine/primary/tranny is cold before you do the adjustment.

sounds like your adjusting screw was already bottomed out when you started. Next time, after loosening the locknut, back out the adjusting screw 3 or 4 turns so you know it's not against anything. Then screw it back in until you feel the resistance you're looking for. At that point, back it out 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn, then adjust the cable for the proper handle feel.

Motorcycle Repair: How to adjust the clutch on a 2008 Harley Davidson Road Glide - YouTube
I used this video to adjust mine on my 08 Ultra.

Good video.
Don't lay your derby cover on the steel diamond plate table, chrome side down - like he did in video. Maybe lay it on newspaper.

I adjust my clutch and lube the cable once a year. Cable lube being the most important thing that get overlooked.
