I am using an SE Ventilator, your stock breather needs a different setup. I believe yours may be just a bolt on with no drilling and tapping involved.

THANKS!

I sent him a PM asking for advice.

The only phobia I have with a filter element at the end of the breather , is it will get residue restricting the free flow of combustion gases. My feeling is the breather should be less restricting , like an open window.imo.

^ Agree. Why bother having something you have to consider, check and maintain, its not like we are EPA compliant anyways. Mine is routed to frame rail and is 45° cut and it blows down, have seen the spit pattern on occasion at startup.

So how often do you think you'll have to empty the catch can, since it's eventually going to get full but never drip?

Yeah, it will be a system prone to some maintenance, but so is checking air pressure, fluid levels, etc. if it gets saturated with oil I assume it will seep from the bottom of the filter and I will watch for that. One reason for the filter or catch can is that I can monitor how much I am spewing. If just an open tube I can't see how much oil I am losing. Not to mention the mess it will make on the bike and garage floor.
If it gets excessive I need to look for the cause and address that.

The reason I did this modification is because oil mist was settling at the bottom of the air filter and spewing back on my side cover, bags and my passengers leg on interstate runs.

After researching these systems, I realized just how much nasty air the engine had to digest and I decided to route it elsewhere.

I am not EPA compliant, but tuners, decatted exhausts and other mods aren't either. Neither is my lawn mower or anyone else's that I am aware of but grass still gets mowed.

My environmental impact is pretty small, especially this year, I have found little time to ride this season.

A couple of edits to address specific questions.

Rocket, I can't see how the filter could ever stop breathing. If oil saturates the filter it should gather at the bottom and seep out, leaving the top half or more to expel air that is under some positive pressure.

Greg, I don't want to have the mess and dribble on the floor and bike. I considered routing the hose to the rear and use the filter but could never find a good path for the hose that didn't touch the exhaust. I expected that to burn thru shortly and make a bigger mess. I would appreciate someone's experience routing their hose, I am still considering that.

Neckball, don't know how long until it makes a mess or if it ever will between maintenance intervals. Time and miles will tell. I can remove it in less than a minute, clean it with K&N degreaser, let it dry in the sun and put it back on as needed.

Hey DK Customs. Chime in with input on how long most users are going between filter cleanings.

good explanation Bill from tenn. It all makes sense, however. the umbrella valves in our t/c's are designed to catch the oil and drip it back into the motor thru channels in the head(s). But allowing just the gases to get sucked into the intake, unfiltered I might add.....right there is a just reason to do what we did. Anything excess Oil ,Residue, wahtever ,is usually from too much oil in the motor.......with everythng spining and faster at highway speeds the oil in the motor has to go somewhere......too much of it and the umbrella valves are over whelmed, like the leafless guutters during a deluge the water just flows off like a waterfall.....same thing with the valves, the oil spews out and ends up at the bottom of the filter and elsewhere, this is all my imho, btw. No hate here, but try running a little less oil and I'll bet you won't get a mess. nay even a drop...i know I don't. my bike stays in one spot all the time......stays dry.

Has anyone used the breather bolts from DK, the ones with the little filter and a brass screen built into the breather bolt. That way there is no ugly hose to run.

I believe too much oil is my problem. Check my posts, I mention it reading higher on the stick than usual.

The fix cures two issues. Hopefully no more oil dribble on the bag and side cover.
But more important, that fouled air is not being recycled thru the engine again. That is probably the best result for me.

Thanks for all comments and suggestions. Maybe someone can take what I have done and have learned and find some value in it if they are having similar issues.

This thread helped me a lot. Thanks to all that have contributed.

I wipe my catch can out about every 50 mikes, pretty simple. Also, I'm not spitting oil onto the roads which we all ride on.
