Default My Findings Too

[QUOTE=TUCCI;13312985]I... did a 200+ mile run today and my by-pass worked flawlessly with a normal amount of oil BB dripping from the end of my atmosphere hose. What I found interesting is there was very little BB vented to the hose cruising 70 MPG and under. It wasn't till I came back the super-slab route running in excess of 85+ was there BB venting down the hose, which collaborates everything I've read....QUOTE]

Tucci- good write-up w/pix. I used a "Herko" mod backing plate on my Heritage years ago and have removed and put it on the last two bikes as well.
I've always filled the CC a 1/4 qt low and never had a drip issue from the down tube (no catch can)...until this last change--decided to fill to HD recommended level.
Like Tucci, I found that normal riding below 70mph no BB; but two up in hot temps as sustained freeway miles above 80-85 produces a couple of drips when parked overnight.
Adding to the chorus--this works and especially on later EPA TCs is highly advised.
Good luck.

So I have been working on my breather by pass. I wanted something that would look good and be easy to take apart and clean. I thought I would try using AN fittings and hose.

I drilled and tapped the back plate and used AN 6 to 1/8" NPT. Then I used several AN fittings to then attached to a breather.

I like how stiff he set up is but the AN hose is short and does not flex alot.

I drilled my holes off center to cleat the throttle body and angle with the short hose isn't the best

Do the holes need to be at teh bottom or can they be off the sides? The holes that currently bring the oil and mist into the throttle body are at 90 degrees. My set up would work much better if I drilled the holes opposite the original holes.

I had to shorten the hoses the original length I used the breather was to low.

I would say you'd be ok but the law of gravity sets on my mind when doing this. If the holes are are the bottom as you have them, then the oil will pool at bottom of the backplate hole and drain out properly.

I agree with laws of gravity but the original holes to drain the oil into the throttle body aren't at the bottom and the oil does not seem to pool. So not sure it really matters. Hoping that by letting it breath better I will not get any oil in the first place.

I was thinking of trying a 45 degree fitting on one side to maybe reduce the strain at the filter. If that does not work I my try the holes at 90 degrees and see how it works.

well the thing to keep in mind is the way the backplate is designed, TB sucking air, air coming in, the oil is actually be "vacuumed" into the TB. You won't have that vacuum once ported to the outside.

Was thinking about that after I did my last post. Would be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on it as well.

I know Smokey Stover did his at 90 degrees then over to his catch can hidden in the horn housing.

oh i'm in no way saying it won't work as I haven't tested it myself. Just in my feeble little mind, it doesn't make sense that it would work as well as having the tapped holes at the bottom.

OK I'll Chime in.... Took me about 1/2 hr to complete. More pics of other crap in the link.
Simple but effective, I got tired of cleaning the idle sensor that was gumming up. I still get some from the fuel but I only have to clean it out maybe once ever yr or more...

Thanks for the Honorable Mention CVO,
So far there has been no problem with the level vents, I tapped into the breather backplate where the tubes going into the TB intersect. So I figured that would work fine with the ID of the 1/8 NPT fittings being larger than the size of the tubes and hoses level until they turn down with no uphill travel.
The only problems I have had are. 1) Had to remove the petcock as the gunk was too thick to drain and clogged it up. I just use a Stainless threaded plug now. 2) I let it go too long without draining once and it started to drip on my primary cover. So I make sure to drain it at least every other fill up, Or If I'm cleaning the bike anyway.
