Default Regulator won't unplug from stator at block

I hope someone on this forum has had this problem and can give me some solid advice. My bike is a 2000 flhtcui. It is only charging when the rpm's are at 2000 or higher. I'm pretty sure I need to replace the stator but before I get into all that I wanted to make sure it's not the regulator, as that is much easier to replace. I tried to unplug the reg from the stator at the block and it simply will not come apart. Is this normal? My assumption is that its melted together and that is the main problem. At any rate, I'm looking at purchasing the Cycle Electric 3 phase kit that comes with a new stator, rotor, and regulator. Any suggestions or other relevant input? I've owned the bike for 8 months. I have the records from the dealership with all the stuff that they did. The stator and reg have been replaced twice, once under warranty and then again in 2007.

I am not sure the wires separate at the block. My understanding was the wires were continuous from stator to regulator. The plug at the block is actually a seal. See if you can take the wires loose at the regulator, and collapse the seal at the block and push it into the hole. Then you will remove the stator and wiring in one piece.
Hope this helps.

Agree, if by block you mean engine block, that is not the disconnect. It's somewhere in between the regulator and the engine block seal.

hmmm I guess Harley changed the setup since the old days - good thing because that plug was always a problem - either coming apart or leaking oil. Joe

the 2000 model touring bikes do not have a plug at the inner primary or at the regulator. The plug is actually under the bike.

The plug is zip tied to the bottom of regulator.

Thanks for all the input fellas. I will check out and report back in a few days when I get a chance. That would be different then all the shovels and evo that I had.

I have had a Cycle Electric voltage regulator for for 3 to 4 years on an 08 Road King. It was less expensive than the Harley Regulator and has been flawless for about 40,000 miles so far. You should be well pleased with their stuff.

Don't worry, it still leaks oil.
