Default Paint Job on Saddle Bags BAD!! Need Expert Advice

Bought a set of Drag Specialties Extended bags in August, took them to a guy that had done paint work (body work on a car) for me in the past. After almost 2 months of waiting and a quart of $200.00 Midnight Pearl paint I finally picked them up. After a day in the sun (80 degrees) the paint is splitting and peeling off in strips.

I'm not sure what he did so I need to get the paint off and have someone else repaint them. How can I get the paint off without destroying the bags. Anyone have experience removing paint off ABS parts? One bags is peeling and the other is splitting and will start to peel.

He used the whole quart on two bags so it's pretty thick.

Bring them back and get a refund or have him do it over to your satisfaction.

I'm no painter so don't take this as gospel, but that sound like too much paint and I think you have to put a adhesion agent on abs for the paint to stick. Others will chime in. No idea hoe to remove it without ruining them.

Definitely go get your money back. Don't let the guy get anywhere near them again. I wouldn't worry about stripping them in case you do more damage than has already been done. Just take them to a quality painter and he can handle it all.

Looks like he cut some corners and didn't treat the plastic before painting to me. Same thing happened on the new plastic bumper cover on my son's car.

If I had done them I would have gone something like this

wipe down with alcohol to clean any mold release agent/fingerprint oil, etc off them

Baked them in the booth and re-washed them with alcohol

Scuff with red scotchbrite to give it "tooth", wash again, shoot with adhesion promoter.

Sprayed them with 2 coats of tinted sealer, with flex additive, sanded with 400, wash with prep solvent

3 coats base coat, 2 coats of clear, wet sand with 2500 wet paper and buff.

Thanks all, I'm pretty sure I know what he did wrong but that's not what I'm looking for, I'd just need to know if anyone has tried to remove paint from ABS products. I don't want to destroy the bags......and no I'm not interested in having him screw them up again by making him "fix" his botched job

You can use aviation stripper on them, but you have to be real careful , and you will have to wash them with soapy water ,and sand the bags after all the paint is off.
If aviation stripper is left on it will eat the bags, and make them really soft.
If the painter used a quart on 2 bags I would bet you can peal it off if you don't wait too long, use a razor blade to lift an edge , and peel it off.

They make a special paint striper for ABS I have used it to strip a inner fairing that I got from someone else that had it painted purple. I went to our local auto paint supplier and got but I have also seen it in regular part stores I do not remember the name of it but it worked great. It was a little milder then aircraft striper but it will not damage the ABS at all. If you follow the steps that Neggy described you will never have any problems out of the paint job.

Thanks Beedeglide, I will start with my local auto parts store and look for the ABS stripper, if they don't have it I'll go to a paint store. I have a painter that will do the job correctly I'm just trying to save some labor cost and if the bags get screwed up removing the paint it will be on me not him.
