It is a tri-glide, I did not see any reference to tranny pan removal in the service manual. I did see a pic of it in the oil drain procedure. There is a hex nut in the manual that says do not remove. What is that about? If it is only a gasket change it sounds doable. Guess I will crawl under and take a look.

Looked under and all bolts to the cover are accessible. There is only about 3/8" clearance in the front and 1/2" in the back from the skid plate. Is that enough to drop and remove the pan or will the tranny have to be lifted? I can see I will have to remove the crossover pipe.

Fastbagger, Found the oil pan removal procedure in the manual. I was looking for the trans pan not realizing they are one in the same. Looks very doable, even easier since it is a tri-glide. Thanks

I know it won't help the OP but I remember reading about this problem 3-4 years ago. Some thought it was vibration causing the dip stick to break off. In that original thread some cut the dip stick off and just used the cutoff cap to screw back over the hole and bought a spare dip stick that they used just when they needed to check the trans fluid level.

^^^^ This sounds like a capital idea. I might just do that, head the problem off at the pass so to speak!

When I first read about this about 5 years ago, I made a dip stick out of a small bolt mounted to some radio support stock as a handle. When I got the correct reading on the home made dip stick, I cut off the the one on the fill cap and just use it as a cap. I had assumed that if the stick broke, it would destroy the transmission, never thought it would fall into the pan never to be heard from again. Over the years I began to think I might have been paranoid to worry about this, but here we are again.
