SPRINGFIELD -- 417 Powersportshad to pull all of its mini bikes and all-terrain vehicles that are marketed towards children off its showroom floor on Tuesday.
"We got a memo," said 417 Powersports vice president Dwight Maggard, "stating if it's for 12-and-under, we had to pull it."
The move is thanks to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. The Act is meant to protect children from toxic levels of lead in toys and other products.
Since the mini bikes and ATVs are marketed for children, they're included under the act.
"I understand lead-based rules," Maggard said, "but how did motorsports get involved. I don't see a child chewing on a motorcycle."
The ban isn't just for the mini bikes and ATV's; it's also for their replacement parts. 417 Powersports and other dealers also won't be able to repair bikes or buy used ones.
State Rep. Tom Self, R-Cole Camp, is fighting the ban on youth motorsports. Self says he's looking out for the kids who enjoy riding and racing. He's also being vigilant of the bigger picture.
