Lane Splitting
#12
Same old nonsense everytime a filtering thread comes up. Car drivers clearly don't see with the bikes out of the way there is more road for them. When bikes move forward in stopped traffic it isn't holding up the cars.
I see a difference to filtering and lane splitting. I do the filtering when traffic is stopped and go slow doing it.

Yes!! Only have done it on my sportbike because my UC seems too wide to do it safely. People still aren't expecting it here & there always seems to be a box truck or landscaping trailer or something to make it too narrow. Then I've seen bikes doing actual lane splitting on the highway & that isn't legal at all.

Drivers in Ohio would not take kindly to motorcycles squeezing between the lanes while they're stuck in traffic. They would ease over to close the gap. They would shout insults and threats. The brothers might bust a cap at you, yo. California has had legal filtering forever and still I see some drivers there taking umbrage.
Imagine idiots seeing it for the first time. Besides, around here it isn't necessary. The lighter traffic moves a lot smoother unless there's an accident and the cops are there. I've snuck around a couple of those over on the apron.

That's something the AMA has been working on for decades, allegedly.
I feel like a driver is more apt to side swipe me when I'm splitting than rear end me accidentally. We've all had cars move over accidentally and on purpose. I split and filter but never as a hard rule. It all depends on the situations around me. If someone is distracted or can't drive, I'm getting away from them regardless of what the law is.

If ******** could fly this place would look like O'Hare Int'l.
I tried to run just one mirror. That idea lasted about two hours. Some sort of rear facing radar that would make an audible alarm if something was closing on the rider at more than 20 mph would be even better than big mirrors.

Like anything else we do on two wheels it's about timing, skill set, confidence level or lack of and what size land barge you ride when it comes to lane sharing/splitting/filtering or whatever the buzz phrase of the moment is. Those that do it have their comfort level and parameter's we stay within, varies widely per rider. Those who don't or legally can't fall into two groups, wish we could's and I would never's, doesn't seem to be a middle ground.
Early in my riding years I was that ******* that split, bobbed and weaved in traffic and screw the legalities, you weren't gonna catch me anyway, this was on the east coast and in the midwest 70's & 80's. Moved to Ca. and it was heaven. Age and bigger machines has curbed my naturale aggressiveness but I will miss not being able to do it when we leave Ca. The area we're looking at it shouldn't be a big thing aside blowing around the idiot tourists driving small apartments everywhere.
