If you email a dealership tell them, within a range, what you want to spend and what type of vehicles you'd consider and ask them to send you some choices.
You've not asked for any advice but I'm gonna offer some anyway. Before you look at vehicles know what your finance options are at the lender of your choice. Compare them to what the dealer has to offer and make the best choice for you. Dealers pass thousands of loans to lenders and as such they sometimes have rates better than your own bank or CU, sometimes not.
Get a good idea what the vehicle(s) you are considering are offered for in your local market. If you look at vehicles for sale by owner in your area always remember the seller has an offering price and a taking price. Sadly, most private sellers base their price on what they owe on a vehicle as opposed to what the market is.
If you have a trade get an idea what it may or may not be worth. KBB or NADA are guides only, there are lots of variables based on miles, eqpt and condition. By the way, dealers use Black Book. It is published weekly and based on auction sales, the other guides are often times several weeks or months behind the market.
If you cannot get together on all terms don't be afraid to walk away, there are others out there.
Above all, if you find a salesperson you deem good to work with give him or her a chance to find you another one or keep you informed of new trade-ins if they don't have the one you want that day.
If you find one you like PM me and I'll tell ya what they're selling for, on average, at auction.

Excellent advice Mickwood!
Guys and gals, sorry I seem to have turned this into Automobile Retail 101, wasn't my intention.
I'll consider riding out to CA for a few days. It'd be cool to hang out with ChesterWood, SoftWood and HelenWood. That's what the map is for. People like NorthernWood could use it to locate folks when he's hitting all of the Ag shows peddling his wares. So if I were to ride to CA, I would have to wear a helmet, lane split, wear white sneakers and stay off of Mulholland Drive as there are super dangerous 180 degree turns with paparazzi snapping pictures?
I drive a 21 year old F-250 'cause I'm too much of a tightwad to go into debt for a new one.

and that is why they won't be selling you a vehicle. There are lots of choices out there when it comes to which dealership you want to purchase from. Remember, every used vehicle is unique, not all the same miles, condition, equipment, etc.

careful ... as a wise person once said " Don't tease me unless you want me "
I actually have plans to ride to CA to visit a friend who moved out to Topango this year if all goes well. I never know until the time comes whether it will happen or not....
