Posers' Coffee House, All Bullshit Accepted, Part VI
Retired at 62, was gettin pretty anxious for it by then. One of the guys I wurked with said, but whatta ya gonna do? Well, just not spending spending 5 or 6 months of the year in a windowless room for those few hours the sun is up is all I needed to make it worthwhile. Oh yeah, and riding in that sunlight, too. I never felt the need to wurk just to have sumptin to do.
Use to be able to take a bus right up to the door to my shop. Then the never ending money pit called an airport ate the road, no more bus. Only downside was it stopped at the Mall of America (that big one) on the way home, and a lot of times a bunch of teens got on. Don't know about the rest of the country, but a lot of teens here came from someplace where they don't seem to have any desire to bathe. Kinda unpleasant... Wus nice in the winter, though, those teens seemed to stay home then, and I could read a book while the bus played creep and go for a couple hours when it wus snowing.
Lotta folks get close to retirement and get laid off or fired, known some. Catastrophe for a lot of em, but them execs making the crazy money don't care. Funny, doesn't seem to happen much with union jobs... 'course, there ain't a whole lot of those left.
Never was a fan of unions but now that im in one it has its perks. Helps that there are no union lovers in our dept. Come in early or stay late or watch the management pick up a shovel or hop on a backhoe an no one cares that its a "violation".
Yeah, the guys that use the contracts to stick it up management's butt every chance they get just make it harder on everyone else, 'cause management would just return the favor - but to everyone. Little common sense and cooperation goes a long way, great stress relief, too.
Stock holders screw it up worse'n anybody. Want the next quarter to have a big profit, screw the next one. Boot the guy running the company fine for 20 years and get an ******* that sells assets, lays off 20% of the people they actually need, have a great quarter, stock goes up, they sell it, make millions, and a whole bunch of working folks watch their future go down the drain in chapter 11 the next year. Happened to a lot of companies lately, happened to the one I wurked for, damned lucky I kept the pension.
