Aliens.....plain An simple.......Tractor beam an pulled'em right inta the belly of the mother ship.
Hauled'em right up to the moon base (it's really hollow ya know) an all the passengers an crew are being probed and implanted with mind controlling chips at this very minute.
This was all pre-planned to coincide with the UNBELIEVABLY HARSH sanctions placed on a handful of Russian minor political figures. Thinking that would occupy so much of the news that the loss of an airliner would go relatively unnoticed.

Or... as the electrical fire started taking out electronics, the pilot turned back to try for an easier to reach airport (they flew near Palau Langkawi, Malaysia, big enough airport for a troubled 777), but they died of smoke inhalation and continued on till it ran out of fuel. Or, without autopilot (fire might have killed that, too), just wandered down into the ocean. But I like the alien abduction better, might get the passengers back alive, and then they'd start mutating into monsters and nobody would complain about guns again, since everyone without one would get their blood sucked out. Or just turned into alien poop...
