For many years I have pondered why We don't celebrate September 3, 1783 as our true Independence Day. To sign a declaration is easy, but obtaining what has been declared is quite another. It wasn't until the signing of the Treaty of Paris the we truly became a self-governed peoples, ending the long, and bitter, fight against Great Britain.

Regardless of my musings, I'd like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable 4th of July.

Remember, bottle rocket fights are the stuff for young people!

Now I'm thinkin'..."the ole man still has it"..She smiles and says " Are you my friend Christy's father?"....Jeez
Well, look at the bright side. At least she didn't ask if you were the grandfather!

All that date is for me is a reminder that only a small fraction of the countries on this planet have governments anywhere near as old as ours, and I expect ours won't outlast the lifetimes of many of it's current citizens. I read somewhere that not many governments have lasted over 200 years, although many have retained a similar make up with pretty much the same laws.

Some of these "older" governments have been eliminated in war and reconstituted later. I guess an argument could be made that the U.S. hasn't had a continuous government over all it's states, either. But even putting us down to the end of the civil war would still put the U.S. way ahead of most of the world.

1001 Hungary
1143 Portugal
1156 Austria
1238 Thailand
1291 Switzerland 1 August
1419 Monaco 1523 Sweden 6 June
1579 Netherlands
1650 Oman
1719 Liechtenstein 23 January
1768 Nepal
1776 United States 4 July (1783 wouldn't change this position)

and down to just after the civil war:

1804 Haiti 1 January
1810 Chile 18 September
1810 Colombia 20 July
1810 Mexico 16 September
1811 Paraguay 14 May
1811 Venezuela 5 July
1816 Argentina 9 July
1821 Costa Rica 15 September
1821 El Salvador 15 September
1821 Guatemala 15 September
1821 Honduras 15 September
1821 Nicaragua 15 September
1821 Peru 28 July
1822 Brazil 7 September
1822 Ecuador 24 May
1825 Bolivia 6 August
1825 Uruguay 25 August
1829 Greece
1830 Belgium 4 October
1839 Luxembourg
1844 Dominican Republic 27 February
1847 Liberia 26 July
1849 Denmark
1861 Italy 17 March
1867 Canada 1 July

We "hung" out aat the pool table and they were playing a game I never heard of. But there was a foxy 20 something blond playing the game with 3 other guys..... She kept looking at me, giving me the eye, ya know..... I thought, this aint good. Some 'ol boy aint gonna like that and I'm gonna have to shank him when he starts in on me. So we had 3 beers and got the hell out of there.

I love the old "road house's !
Found out at my Dad's funeral that Mum sang in a roadhouse in her younger days. An uncle was spilling the beans about a few things that happened before I was born, including that he had a crush on her while Dad was fighting in Europe, but he never told anyone (he was a teen at the time). Mom was kinda surprised to hear that; so was his wife...

Moldy, try to keep up with the names of countries in Africa. I had them all down pat at one point many years ago, but I have since given up trying, Good thing I have the AlGore a net available most of the time.
