That's one lucky guy, on the other side of the inner case, he'd have had a trashed engine. Lucky it didn't take out something where it was. That would be so obvious putting it back together, makes me wonder if someone was having a little "fun" on their last day of work. If there was any damage at all to the clutch, I'd replace it, especially when he's talking about a 2,000 mile trip with it.
