Default Engine braking - Dangerous for your engine or not?

In a thread I was reading someone suggested it ruins your crankshaft when you use your engine to reduce speed before braking... https://www.hdforums.com/forum/10227331-post23.html

Curious, I searched google for more information, and it seems like some people agree with that, and some don't....
http://www.msgroup.org/forums/mtt/to...?TOPIC_ID=2953

I wonder how does one get to the bottom of this to learn how much harm this actually causes your engine. Any ideas?

I downshift all time, blipping the throttle as I kick it down.In over half a million miles,I've never had a crankshaft,or transmission failure. And my brakes last a hell of a long time.

It's all about doing it right, don't rev it so much (Like going from 5th to 1st) and release it slowly

brakes are cheaper than engine parts/repairs, just a thought. engine wear will increase, due to the higher rpm on the decel, clutch wear will increase, as well, is this going to shorted the life by 50,000 miles? no, but brakes are still cheaper

I downshift, but not like some singularity stupid, blazing hot mid-day sun on Mercury stupid, more stupid in one second than our entire galaxy emits in a year. Quasar stupid, rider!!

You use your engine to decelerate every time you decrease the throttle input.
EVERY time. Have you destroyed your crankshaft yet?

I cant imagine the force exerted on the crank during deceleration differ as much as the force exerted during accelerating by the pistons. Got me. Now if you drop it into 2nd doing freeway speed and the tire doesnt break loose that might hurt something but that force has to go through the drive belt, transmission, clutch, primary chain and compensator before getting to the crank but what do I know. Not very much depending who you ask...

actually thats how you twist a crank for warr. claims 2 gear downshift around 60-65 almost guaranteed a twisted crank. obviously an abusive move, but if ya want a new crank....

Maybe this is a better example. Going thru the twisties, ya gots a 40 yrd. stright away, you rev it up and hit 3rd gear. Coming into the next curve, you break and downshift, back into second gear, to make the curve.

People pay alot of money to come to The Dragon every year to do just that. Maybe I should invest in a crank busniess!! just sayin........
