Default Biker vs. 1%'r

What makes someone a biker and can someone be called a biker and not be a 1%'r? I have always viewed "bikers" as people who ride a lot and follow the rules of good roadmanship, i.e. they help other riders in trouble, pass the time with other riders, consider their bike to be an integral part of their life rather than an accessory, help old ladies cross the road etc... but not necessarily members of a MC.

In the UK where I grew up this would be the definition of being a biker, so is there a different opinion in the USA?

Thoughts?

A 1%er, or life long hangaround. I consider a motorcycle rider to be what you call a biker.

Try again, I am not asking what a 1%'r is.

a biker is of the mind of the beholder. It varies from observer to observer.

The only reason I ask is that in conversation I referred to myself as a biker and an American friend said I was claiming to be a 1%'r which I wasn't, I was just using the term in the way I would in England, I was wondering if this perception that he had of bikers being 1%'rs was general in the US or if he was just confused.

many different meanings across the board or the pond
In England when I was there phag meant cigaret and two fingers meant you bugger off

Over her it's all bolloxed up the other way two fingers mean victory and middle one means fugg off, n phag means ghey
