Just like highway pegs, never really "got" them but once I owned them, use 'em all the time

I've been riding road bikes since "74" and just bought my first set of chaps last year. As far as I'm concerned it's one of the most convenient pieces of clothing I have ever purchased.

30 years ago when i bought mine, there wasn't any of this pirate, ymca bullshit. i got them because they cut the cold. mine are dirty, scuffed up and spattered with dead bugs. never been cleaned except when they got wet from the rain. i'm proud of the years and miles on them.

Three weeks ago today I rode from Detroit to Central PA. It was a damp 50 degrees with strong wind gusts when I started out and about a half hour east of Toledo it started raining and continued most of the way.

I had underarmor cold weather top and bottoms, jeans and chaps on my legs, a heavy leather jacket (with liner) over a t-shirt and long sleeve thermal shirt on top. This combination, while bulky, really worked well. I can honestly say that it was a great ride. Sure, I wasn't toasty warm but it was more than tolerable.

BTW...the jacket and chaps took about two days to dry out and my brother-in-law's boot dryers did a great job on my boots and cold weather leather gloves. I was amazed that nothing was ruined.

I don't care what anyone thinks... chaps are the way to go in cold weather!

I bought a pair of leather pants back in the 80s, figuring if chaps are good, pants are better. Paid dearly for em too. Problem with pants is your stuck in em when you get where your going. When not riding for a while you can pull chaps off. Not so easy with pants.
Bet I haven't worn em 5 times in 25 years. Every time I do I remember why I don't.
