Hmmmm.... That's actually a credo that dates back to the Spartans/Romans that has been adopted / used by virtually all military organizations to some extent or another. Marines quote it, as do Army Special Forces, etc. But it's also quite prominent in Japanese history, in particular with the Samurai.

Other expressions such as "falling on your sword" (a form of suicide) related to "death before dishonor" also date back to Spartan/Roman times and related to the "Death before Dishonor" code. For the Samurai, hara-kiri was essentially the same thing.

It was the motto of the Waffen SS. It's still in use in some "groups" in Germany.

But of all things, I think I like the US air force prayer best. I think, Oldboldpilot wrote it here somewhere:
"Please, Lord, don't let me fugg this up"

That's the fancy version of what ground control folks overhead naval aviator and astronaut Alan Shepard say before blasting into space on the 2nd Mercury shot, aka. Shepard's Prayer.

What Shepard confirmed he'd said to himself before launch was "Don't **** up". It got fancied it up in either the book or the movie The Right Stuff.
