Took me around 2 years to become fluent in english. If I can do it, everybody should be able to do it. I try to blend in as much as possible, and my accent (pretty heavy, yet) bothers the crap out of me.
If you're in Rome...
Only time my accent is detectable is when I'm drunk or angry....
but I learned English in my teens. My parents still have very heavy accent.
Guys I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over an accent people born and bred in this country 4 + generations can't speak the damn language decently ever been in the deep south ? New York ? Botson ? It's just the way it is .
Trucker here too, I'm 35, been out here since I was 19 doing it. It's been a long road and I may actually be moving into the Safety Director's chair soon. Oh, my how it will be nice to get off the Ribbon of Darkness.

If ya ain't from Oklahoma ya probably talk funny. End of story.
I still have a hard time understanding people from the south. I don't get Larry the cable guy at all. Oh, wait! That's cause I have no sense of humour worth mentioning.
Living in Japan, their language isn't too difficult unless you want to read and then it is impossible. But I've been told many times that Russian is one of the most difficult languages on the planet. there are many, many Russians and Ukrainians in Sacramento. Seem like really nice people although a bit reserved at first.
