best glue to attach metal to abs?
just thinking a project through in my head , what would be the best adhesive to attach metal (like a nut ) to abs plastic ?

Also two part epoxy from napa with a 30 min set up time. Not sure a nut would hold with any kind of latural load though. Good luck!

As far as adhesive I'd try epoxy (JP weld to be specific). Not sure of how strong you need it or how pretty it need to be. Rough up the ABS and the metal, if you can attach the nut to a metal plate and get more contact area between the surfaces the better.

Try JB weld first. If that fails, go to Lowes and get a small tube of "Stick & Seal". DON"T get the "easy clean up" type. You want the old fashioned solvent based glue. Prep and glue as follows:
Clean all surfaces well, then rough up with some sandpaper so the glue will bite into the material.
Apply "Stick and Seal" to BOTH surfaces to be glued together and allow to dry for about 1 minute, no more.
Press the parts together and allow to cure for 24 hours.
I have had really good results with this stuff when gluing dissimilar materials together.

JB weld. I use it sometimes to bond micarta and steel. Works like a charm, and holds up to 2 tons. Just make sure to give it some cure time at room temperature.

All these recommendations are good, but for appearances and holding power, nothing beats rivets. Use 3/16" stainless blind pop rivets. Line up your metal over your abs and hold them together while you drill through both sides (it helps to have a friend do the drilling while you hold the metal). This technique also works well to affix metal to your head or to the back of your hands, either one of which, in my opinion, would be more beneficial than having steel-lined abs. What are you gonna do if you fall into deep water? You'll sink! Seriously, I must recommend against abs of steel. I tried them and they're really more trouble than they're worth. You can get almost the same level of protection using 6061-T6 anodized sheet.
