Since when did Engineers get on the most hated, least respected professions list?

My best friend of 46 years is an engineer. He has worked for a major engine maker for almost 40 years. He answers the telephone at work by saying "Engineering". I accuse him of being an "enginequeer". It is a wonder we are still friends. He has never and I mean never said or implied to me in a condescending tone, that he was an engineer. I guess when you're a good guy and knowledgeable, you don't have to tell everyone.

Engineers, at least in my line of work are famous for lacking hands-on "real world" experience, and cause a lot of grief by invoking book ways that don't often work in real practice. All the schooling in the world does not replace hands-on experience and all that time in school sometimes prevents that hands on knowledge from taking place.

All that school time often gives them an ego (as in post #1 of this thread) that often shuts down their willingness to hear what the "hands on" guys are telling them.

Thus the comments like this are plentiful all over the world:

Good for you.

Here's a tip. Talk to others as if they were on a similar level as you.
Youll be amased at the results!
