Coleman beat me to it but I was going to say the year I moved from NY to Fla is the year they stopped inspections. My NY friends still have their eyes bug out when I tell them no auto inspections and I carry my gun everywhere.

Since 1978 no vehicle in the USA can legally modify the factory exhaust system. It simply has taken this long to reach the end guy. Until now it was mostly enforced on dealers and shops with a $10,000 fine per unit that was modified. Congress didn't think about owners doing it themselves and particularly motorcycles. We were off the radar but they are lining the sights up on us now.

I'm currently buying all the never used, slightly used & new old stock original equipment exhausts I can get my hands on. They often can be had for free or pennies on the dollar. I figure about 10-15 or 20 years from now they will be more valuable than gold, rubies or diamonds as people are gradually forced to convert back to original equipment or go to jail.
