-30 celsius, in a quinzhee. -27 celsius in a tent.

A quinzhee is kind of like an igloo, but easier to make. Much warmer than a tent, too.

Camped many times in the military with -20 to -30 degree nights. Coldest I stayed with no tent or bag and just a poncho liner to keep warm was about 10 degrees.

Family camping we do fine until the temps start dropping below 0. Only have a few weeks in NC where it gets that cold at night unless you are in the mountains.

What really sucks is when u have 3 am fire watch and got to get outta your bivy and stand around and watch ammo for an hour or so.

I in no way mean any disrespect for anyone who served or is still in any branch of the military but after hearing or reading your guys stories I am so happy they tossed my butt out of that induction center back in 72 only time I was ever happy about being banged up in a motorcycle wreck . I do believe I had a much better time not freezing my *** off somewhere .

Remember the Abott and Costello movie Buck Privates?
In the movie their squad lived in large canvas tent on a wooden platform.

Well my dad was in the army 1935 - 1937 at Fort Drum. He told the story of how he lived in a tent just like that. They had a pot belly stove in the tent but they were always cold. The sargents were cheap when it came to giving out coal to put in the stove.

So one night they were so tired being so cold that oil or kerosene was put into the stove. My dad said the stove got so hot the iron was turning red from the heat.

Sargent came yelling who was responsible, everyone tried to pretend they were asleep.

I tried to google weather records for that time frame at Fort Drum but have not been successful.

When I left MCMWTC in Bridgeport CA in 1992 there was still a tent city for the units to stay in while they trained. They began construction of open squad bay barracks a few years after I left though.
