Sorry, just a novice on these subject matters. I keep hearing this phrase though. How does 1 earn the right to wear a 3pp? Is it like hazing a fraternity in college?
You would stand a better chance of becoming a Mason, but the road to joining either is the same

wear what you want to wear as long as you don't pose as one of the "clubs" you should be OK 85% of the time. I've seen a local group of riders hang out where real 3patchers where and everyone got along just fine but you never know who just might take notice.
The requirements to earn a patch are entirely dependent upon the club you wanna join. Even then, the expectations from one prospect to the next could vary withing the same club. Find a club you think fits your values and ask a member about hangin' with them. It's probably best if you just find out about a function they're having that's open to all, and go. Even 81's have fundraisers. If you come right out and ask them what it takes, they'll probably tell you, "you wouldn't understand" Or they might just hurt you.

You are very right in that it is something that must be earned and respected. While every club does it different - they all want to know how much you are willing to do to earn the right to wear the colors. You don't get the colors for surviving the "hazing", or being present for a number of days on a calendar, you get the colors when you have earned the respect of the club and its members.
How does 1 earn the right to wear a 3pp? - by doing what ever it takes because the right to wear the colors means that much to you.
