The PO aren't looking to bust riders with non-DOT approved exhaust systems in every town across the USA as long as they keep it under control.
If you have a spasmatic right hand you just can't control while at a stoplight, going under a bridge , through a tunnel or in ANY town or city well then you might draw some unwanted attention from the locals.

"Keep it down in town."

I'm not upset about the loud exhaust part....I totally agree with it. There are quite a few obnoxous exhaust here, and some that aren't bad, unless you really crack that throttle. I'm upset with how the media here in Maine is portraying everyone that rides a motorcycle in this State. http://www.mecalm.org/ This group is trying to get the state to implement the EPA stamp for exhausts. http://camrel.org/ This group is trying to veto the law that was put into effect on July 12th that went under the radar, and the citizens didn't even get to vote on. Also, the Waterville PD have been pulling over any and all motorcycles because of exhaust noise even with stock exhaust. I'm all about stopping the obnoxious exhaust, but unfortunately they are profiling all motorcycles and treating us as outlaws.

Must be a great place to live if this is their biggest problem...

For starters, lawmakers defined "excessive or unusual noise" simply as "motor noise emitted by a motor vehicle that is noticeably louder than similar vehicles in the environment."

They also tweaked a part of the statute that previously made it illegal to modify a muffler system only if the intent was to make the vehicle louder. Now, there's no longer a need for police to prove intent -- if the end result is a louder vehicle, the law has been broken.
What kind of law is that... the wording means they can do this for any bike with aftermarket exhaust.. or slip-ons... right? Seems like it's giving way too much power to the police to use their own discretion. That never ends well.

Default the real problem

They have many more policemen than they know what to do with if this is a huge priority. And they have too many tax-dollars to spend on new technology. It's a BUSINESS! And it's happening all over America.

That is exactly what it's doing. It is left up to the police officers discretion. I just got my bike inspected with Samson BG3's, a cop could pull me over because they are "noticably louder than stock." But I can get it inspected with them on there

It's too bad that we have to have this law, there are some beautiful places to take long rides on here, but with this law it is keeping other motorcyclists out of the state. Just last weekend the state police had a check point at the border to "check for inspection stickers" and because riders from NH heard about the law, they turned around at the border and went elsewhere. Look at the revenue that this state could lose because of this.
