A Chicago man died Thursday when he lost control of the reportedly stolen motorcycle he was riding in the North Austin neighborhood.
Derek Hawkins, 30, of the 5600 block of West Cortland Street, crashed in the 1800 block of North Linder Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Hawkins was pronounced dead at 8:07 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, a medical examiner's spokesman said.
The accident happened at 4:31 p.m., according to a police report. Hawkins was traveling north on North Linder Avenue on a 2004 Suzuki Hayabusa which was reportedly stolen when he lost control and struck a tree, the report said. He was not wearing a helmet, the report said.
An officer from the Major Accidents Investigation Unit, which is investigating the crash, said that after the motorcycle hit a tree, the man was thrown into a parked vehicle.
Police responded to the scene, but it was not immediately clear whether they were in pursuit of the motorcycle at the time, the officer said.
