Apparently he became a friend of McQueen's, who bought a lot of his bikes through Ekins. And when the producers of the 'Great Escape' wanted a stuntman, McQueen suggested Ekins.
And the bike in the 'Great Escape' was neither Harley nor BMW nor Zündapp. It was a Triumph.

Steve Mcqueen was entered as a member of the American team in the ISDT in 1964 and 1965. (International Six Day Trails) In 1965 the ISDT was to be held at the Isle of Man in England but due to his commitment to film “The Cincinnati Kid” he could not make the race so he asked his friend, the great motorcycle racer Ed Kretz Jr., if he would take his place on the American team. Ed Kretz Jr., who hung out with Lee Marvin and Bud Ekins and Steve McQueen, said yes and gave it a try. Unfortunately, that year, the weather was really bad and the American team was not too successful in their attempts at traveling the course.

I figure this is the best thread to post this in, I watched X-men Wolverine last night and Logan (the wolverine) was talking with an old man about the old guy's motorcycle. Logan is asked what has favorite bike was. Logan's response was a 1941 Panhead! 1941? I think the writers needed to do a little Harley homework before putting that "fact" in the script. Every knuckel head knows the pan head did not come out until 1948. Thank you H-D forum for that bit of knowledge now in my head.
