Legal To Pass Traffic On Shoulder in U.S.?
#12
Illegal here but if you were from another country you would think the following is legal
Passing on the shoulder even if your drivin your cage
Right turns from the shoulder
Right turn on red no need to actually stop
After a light turns red three vehicles can still proceed in any direction
20 MPH over any speed limit
No need to actually stop for a stop sign...slow down is all thats required
Yield...WTF is that!!!
You can use a parking lot or gas station to avoid a red light!!!

Here in NJ you can't go onto the shoulder whether paved or otherwise, to pass a car either while it's moving (obvious) or while it's stopped making a left turn (not so obvious).
It's an antiquated law imo. For one, the police rarely enforce it unless there's an accident. Two, everyone does it. If you're the unlucky one who gets the cop who's in a bad mood, you get a ticket equal to passing a stopped school bus.
I'd rather see it changed to allow the passing at a much reduced speed.

LOL As someone new to the states, ya WOULD think those are legal after watchin traffic behaviour for a while wouldn't ya. I was watchin a movie one time...think it was 'bout some outterspace alien...and he was tryin to learn how to drive...when asked 'bout the rules of traffic lights he said, "Red means stop. Green means go. Yellow means go very fast."
Interesting. Yes, if I remember from my motorcycle riding days in the U.S., it was illegal where I was from (CO), too. Traffic laws are actually very strict, here in Japan - you can't even make a left turn (we drive on the opposite side of the road here) on red, but I think that's because there are a LOT of blind intersections. It is quite difficult to get a license to operate big (over 400cc) motorcycles. They require over 30 hours on the driving range, under the supervision of an instructor and lots of money.
