I have been riding for 30 years and over and over again i have givin a blast with my pipes and people do look, also deer which are like rodents in British Columbia take off running the other way from the sound. So yes loud pipes prevent accidents.

Anything that makes us more visable to the cagers is a plus. Including ball bearings in your pocket. Do you think your horn gets attention?

Now, this could be coincidence, etc and I make no bones about it.

Most people make the arguement that loud pipes save lives to justify making a racket. I am one of those people - I like my bike loud, BUT generally try to keep it respectable in residential areas.

I live near a highway bypass and hear loud piped Harleys drowned out by semi trucks, deisel half tons and "youngsters" with 20,000,000 watt bass blasting music(?). So, until the rest of the world complains about PLANES, TRAINS, BILLION WATT stereos, Semi Trucks and all other manner of noisy things, I will say "loud pipes save lives" too.
Hit the nail on the head right there. I know for a fact that theres been times a minivan driving soccer mom with a cell phone in her ear has heard me coming and not changed lanes on me . Thers a lot more noise out there than just bikes but no one complains about though. Its us radical bikers that are the problem.

All I know is last year while cruising down the highway i approached my wife and kids in the car ahead of me. My daughter looks at my wife and says I hear dad coming where is he? I was 12 car lenghts behind when my wife looked in the mirror. Sound does travel ahead of the bike no matter what some dumb azz instructor thinks.

sweet. someone resurrected a year old thread started by a troll on everyone's favorite topic.

not really gonna add to the argument here but if you don't like loud pipes, and don't think they serve a purpose, then don't put them on your bike. just don't come on the internet and bitch at other people who like the sound.

and it's a stupid argument if you really think about it...anyone with evidence that loud pipes DON'T save lives don't have much of a say, do they?

HAHA I started a loud pipes thread about a month ago with the fact chevy was adding noise to their cars cause they are too quiet. My take on loud pipes...If any instance has ever happened where a motorist heard you before saw you, well the sound may have just saved your life... So if two lives have been spared in this world through the use of loud pipes, well thats lives(plural) and as such they do in fact save lives. How many... who cares, but for sure it has helped more than one person get noticed on the road...So yes they do save lives... it is proven...and not really open for debate by any sane person with a lick of common sense....we see and hear things around us...we use sound to alert us of our surroundings... all people use their audible senses while driving(unless they are deaf)...if we did not, then there would be no need to make it illegal to wear headphones while driving or riding. So obviously lawmakers feel it is important that you hear as well as see while driving....hear what??...sirens, horns, motorcycle tailpipes, other cars....anything that can help alert you to what is around you.

Having a loud bike is so contraversial??? How come this issue isn't with "old school" muscle cars???? No one mentions about have a loud car that "it saves lives". They just like the sound of it. Why can't bikes be the same? Is there anyone out there that doesn't enjoy the sound of a big block 69 camaro with a high lift cam in it??

I have loud pipes because I WANT to, having people in cars knowing that your are next to them is a bonus

cause old school muscle cars are not being singled out the way motorcycles are for their loud pipes!
