How often do you change tires?
#21
I used to never worry about tires getting too old and replaced them when they were worn out. Not so much the past several years since I have had back problems. Hopefully, the back issues are over since I have had back surgery about six weeks ago. I’m just waiting for the doctor to give me the ok to ride.

Just replaced the tires on my 17' RGS. Tread looked great at 10,500 miles. But both tires were from early 2016. Probably would have run them longer, but I bought the bike used November 2023 and have no idea if the bike was cared for or how it was ridden.
Both new tires are dated 2024, so I'm happy and feel safer.

There are many opinions on when to replace your tires, besides obvious wear or age cracks or discoloration. You can wade through these various opinions, and decide. However...
Two easy ways to know are usually provided by the tire manufacturers:
1. Wear indicators; small bumps in between the treads indicate minimal wear allowance. Look at the tire's sidewall - there are little triangles or arrows marking the location of the wear indicators. Replace tires when the treads are level with any of the wear indicators.
2. DOT manufacture date: It is stamped onto the sidewall. The last 2 digits are the year of manufacture. Lots of opinions of how many years to go, but 6 years is reasonable and recommended by some manufacturers.
