For what it's worth, depending how he scores, he could have his choice of jobs, and there is plenty of other MOSs in the Marines that need big dudes. Plenty of non-combat jobs that will get him trained up on "real world" skills to use once he gets out
Not sure I would necessarily say it's a great time to join, but you're only 17/18 once, right?
Regardless, I would check in with all the branches and see who has the best offer. In the Marines a kid as big as Jaxen will end up carrying the M240. My old man (Marine) was big like that, and carried the BAR among other things. Oddly enough, his favorite was the Thompson .45.
