The best I can come up with is possible intimidation tactic to get the guy or guys to plead guilty. The same thing happened to me with a car I didn't steal when I was 18. The witnesses that couldn't possibly have seen me because I didn't do it didn't show up for court and they had to toss it.

 

I was in the barracks, 3 doors down with friends. We were doing the typical weekend barracks behavior, so no one saw or heard anything
