I'm not a guitar player (wish I were!) but I would leave the finish as is....clean up and make it look best you can, but leave the "experience" as is. I would update the electronics to make sure they work. Then enjoy the hell out of it!!

That’s some good stuff.
Bought some Japanese Whiskey on the weekend. Wasn’t bad, was pretty smooth.
