Well h3ll. At least the manufacturing of the shim will be fun and making more couldn't hurt.

I found it interesting because we all rode through there the other day on the way to Reno. I had never heard of it. I noticed a LOT of very large boulders everywhere in the fields. I guessed that they were volcanic in nature. I'm not sure what the process is, but I would imagine the thing blew it's top sending hot magma into the air, and it cooled into solid form as it returned to the ground. That must have been a hell of a thing to have that raining down.
Jenn and I noticed it up there. I think it's called pyroclast.
At least that's what I lied to her.

I’m hoping for the best but I know if it were me doing the repair it would fail miserably

But that’s only because I’m cursed.

If you have more than one garage door and a belt goes bad for the opener do yourself a favor and replace both. Mine went bad within days of each other from dry rot. Youtube is also your friend because those belts are timed. It isn't like throwing a fan belt on.

We wrestled that shifter shaft out, shimmed it with a Mexican beer can and it works like a champ. Note-Use strips of the beer can stuck through the arm before putting it back on the shaft. Both were stripped by the way.

In this case, the more malleable the shim, the better, until you get to the point of ridiculous of course.
EDIT: Congrats!!

Bill, the application of soft metal that conforms to what is left of the splines is exactly what is needed in this case.
