TOAK, The Thread of All Knowledge part XIV.
I checked the DoT websites and with the fire along SR-14 and lane closures, we’re just going to have to pound out I-84. shooting for a 3:00 arrival at your homestead.

On second thought, I’m looking at some riding routes along the way that would be fun…

Morning gents. Continued safe travels. I'm gong back to sleep, 'cause, you guessed it, I didn't last night.
Morning gents!
I would still cross over at Cascade Locks. You don't want to be on 84 merging onto 205 at 3PM. From Bridge of the Gods it's a very easy but scenic ride to my place that avoids traffic. If you take the Salmon Falls route I mentioned (Turn at Cape Horn) and then run Washougal River Rd to Blair Rd, and then Hwy 500 to 162nd and north you will miss most of the city.
They now charge to go through the "Waterfall Corridor"/Hwy 30. It's during peak tourist season to limit traffic. You actually have to reserve a time.
Russ - depending on how much time you want to be on the road, this is a really scenic route -
It's 6:18 and 312 miles to Cascade locks, so your entire travel time would be close to 8 hours with stops. Probably similar to your ride yesterday with amazing vistas and volcano views (Rainier, Adams, MSH, Jefferson, Sisters, and of course Hood) through high desert, canyons, rivers, etc. Maupin is a nice stop for lunch. It's maybe a bit too ambitious to add on top of how much riding you have already been doing.

That said I do remember it being extremely busy and hard/impossible to find parking at most popular stops.
Wow, really? Making it a toll road makes a little sense, but kind of dumb you have to reserve a time do drive a numbered highway. When did they start that? We went in May 2019 and I dont recall paying at the time.... that was a fun day, we did Hwy 30 with our rental Challenger and stopped a lot to do a few small hikes along the way.
