Can someone here tell me what an engine air filter does for a diesel engine?

I thought only a gasoline engine needed to mix air with the fuel for ignition. Perhaps air is injected as well as diesel fuel.

You can't have combustion without oxygen

Jeff, both engines operate on the same principle of an air/fuel mixture. Air is required for combustion to occur. One case it is gas, the other is diesel.
You do not want dirty, unfiltered air being sucked into your motor !!

So they got me for an engine air filter and a cabin filter. It's getting where an oil change is a small fortune. I am blaming it on Brandon.

Jeff, the first stop for the air on a modern diesel is the turbocharger. Turbochargers are precision pieces of machinery that don’t respond well to dirt. ie pre-cleaned air.
