When I was stationed in Alaska it was rare to see a car without a chipped windshield. They said they used rock instead of salt, as salt attracted the moose

 

They use calcium and the odd time beet juice up here.

They use a magnesium chloride mix here too, which is somewhat hard on the finish if it isn't washed off. Of course the state denies this, but the proof is out there. Beet juice has been investigated as well. Colorado is the country's biggest producer of sugar beets. Trivia of the day, right there.
