I’ll take a shot at it, that yellow piece of wire is changing the blue electricity to red and the red electricity to blue.

Chuck, Datsun did that all the time . Wire comes into a connector as red and comes out a different color.

I think that’s what caused them to rust out prematurely

So did much of my house wiring. A simple receptacle could have 6 different colors in the box. First major project when I bought this house was rewiring it right away. I looked in the circuit breaker boxes of all the houses I looked at first visit, knew what I was getting into, but it was at a price I was willing to rewire for. Now I can trust it. I've bought two houses new, and both had wiring problems from the start; just wire the damn house meself and then I don't have to worry about it. Pita for a 4 level house, though.
