The Nine Banded Armadillo carries leprosy and can transfer the disease, mycobacterium leprae, to humans. It's the only animal carrier of m leprae. Touching/eating them, etc. can cause a transfer..... as well as human transfer.

We have them here. I don't touch them or go near them. I kill the few that wander onto my property. That said, it's a very small percentage that carry it and no reports around here that I've ever heard of. More rabies in the bats and raccoons than anything else.
