I taught myself to weld on sheet metal when I was building the Topless Z Car. I became an expert.......on filling burn through holes ! Soft copper tubing and fittings became my best friends.

Gas welding, brazing, hot box ( stick ) MIG ( Never did any TIG ) ... It all takes a certain skill and patience ... Early on I did a lot of gas and overhead stick welding on exhaust systems when a wire feed was way too expensive ... You had to be a bit of a contortionist and learn to be creative with the rod to get into some tight places ... 6013 ( beginners rod ) was the easy rod to use ... 6011 a bit stronger ... Today most would look at the old "Hot Box" and be hard pressed to lay a bead let alone a stack of dimes ... I got pretty good at great beads with excellent penetration :>)

My father in law taught me to braze and stick weld. I took what I learned from that and learned to Mig. I can mig very strong welds anymore, but that was a process to learn. I started with flux core and got good at that before moving to gas.

I can weld sheet metal too, and I've been very successful doing it well. Patience is the key.

I thought I was going to be a career welder and fitter. I was trained in the service, although I did not get that much practical application after that while in the Navy. When I got out of the service I went to work for a mechanical engineering company and did loads of welding and fitting, mostly pipe. I passed my high pressure practice test and was ready to go for the certification when I made the wholesale decision it was not a career for me. I like it and was good at it but I thought too rough on the eyes. I have dabbled here and there with it over the years but have never owned a welder. I once helped a friend out that was a realtor. I welded together about 100 for sale sign frames for him. That was fun.
