The Pit Boss is a less expensive alternative to the Treager, but has worked well for me anyway. I gave around $500 for mine.
The "drip shield" for lack of better term sits above the fire box and below the main grill. Picture taken with a portion of the top grill removed.
I know - my grill needs cleaning.
You can see a potion of the shield will slide left, exposing your item to firebox flame through the slots, with the flame only reaching an inch or so above the slot. This allows searing and grilling on a pellet grill.
When smoking and slow cooking, slide the shield or cover right to cover the slots completely.

That's actually a pretty cool idea, Stan. Nice.

We're back. Just got back from the vet with my buddy. In the last week and a half, she peed on her favorite chair three times. So we took her to the vet.
