TOAK, The Thread of All Knowledge Part XIII
I have searched the net over the past several days and without an air gap, the muffler will melt the bag. But that's touching it. I called these companies asking and not one person (according to them so take that for what it's worth) has reported a melted bag. With a clean tune soot should not build up and the heat is down considerably. I measured head pipe temps, muffler temps, and EGT last night and found no numbers that alarmed me. While idling long enough to the get the engine to temp the bag never exceeded 111 degrees. Most of the gasses flow to the inside, off the bag. I will continue to worry about the pipe and my bag until sometime next week which is now ruining my sleep. I have read countless articles and so far it seems I'm safe, but I won't stop worrying now until I know.
If the pipe melts the bag I'll eat it and replace or repair it and get a longer pipe. I'll be pissed and at this point, there's not much else to do but ride it, which I can't, because I'm waiting for powder coat. The guy keeps making excuses. When his oven went down I sent my father (biological) to help get it back on line. Yesterday it was more BS. I'm gonna my parts and run when they're done. I never want to go back.
My grandfather died, as you know, so I'm headed to Kansas on Thursday so make it just in time for the memorial service. A day late and a dollar short. I knew his time was close and I scheduled this weekend to go see him and my dad (chose to be in my life) who was hurt. I'll be taking the truck. My plan was to see him before he died, but my job gets in the way and I didn't make it in time. At this point, I just have to accept what life throws and that includes melted bags.

Anti-seize necessary?
I know all the manuals say use anti-seize and I have for years. But the question did come up in a discussion that if the bearings are greased and the axle doesn't make contact with moving parts than is anti-seize truly necessary? I'll continue to use it cause I don't wanna find out the failure answer on the road!
