Moldie, Resident Sporty Expert to the Bat Phone Please.......... Resident Sporty Expert to the Bat Phone Please.
OK. I'm lazy so far and haven't broke out the parts breakdowns yet (but I can / will eventually).
Moldie, my shifter shaft has a slight weep to it. ().
Is that an o-ring in the case or a shaft seal on the shaft? Either way I assume it is NOT replaceable from the outside of the primary cover. The clutch may be due for some new disks anyway.
I figure you've been in there before Moldie ......... once or twice.

Clutch plates... yeah, the infamous grenading clutch spring. I took that out at about 30,000 miles, none of the brass (brass?! Stupid soft for that kind of load) rivets fell out, but all were really loose. With all the shifting in the Black Hills twisties a couple years later, good chance it would have blown if I hadn't changed it. With those miles on the clutch, I went with a spring plate eliminator set with all new fiber plates, but if your Sporty has the usual less than 10,000 miles, just pull out the spring plate and put in the 3 plates (forget if it's two fiber or two metal) to give the stack the right thickness. Seemed smoother shifting without the spring plate, but it probably wasn't at its best with those loose rivets.
While you're bending over anyway, pull that little plate and check the primary chain tension. Easy to adjust. I'm trying to think of anything else that I've had to fix, but it's been one of the most reliable bikes I've had. Changed the front brake pads to either EBC or Lyndall, I've used both on different bikes and they've always been an improvement; when I got the bike the pads didn't look real worn but stopping was pathetic. Does pretty good now. You've found out already the stock seat and shocks are terrible, for just having fun and not getting serious, take off air shocks from a big twin fit, handle pretty much the same, and are comfy enough. If you find a pair, I have a couple tips for installing them, some of the how-to's on this forum are ridiculously over complicated.
Sig pic has oldest grandson (only one at the time) putting the gasket on, I put the primary cover in place and let him put the screws in. I always use a torque wrench on those, so I wasn't worried about him getting them right.
Added trip to Albany tonight. Nutter 150 miles. Made pretty good time. Soaking some drop n hook time. In the parking lot.
Good morning all. Back to the computer to do some work. Should be a quiet day. Everyone ride safe.
