Some nice riding east of Portland. I haven't been there since I-84 was built, but looks like some of the old highway, now the Historic Columbia River Highway, is still there. Shouldn't be much more than tourist traffic on it now, great scenic views, some nice curvy sections, and a few waterfalls. Be sure to check forecast wind speeds, it can get ferocious through the river valley. Might even see some wind surfers. Depending where you leave from Portland, you can see a lot in a couple hours ride, although you can follow the Columbia River much farther than that. Highway 14 on the Washington side isn't near as scenic. You could probably spend most of your riding time just on the mountain roads in the Mt Hood area, but I never went there. Wanted to, spent a winter and spring in Pasco, WA, a lot farther east near the Columbia. Was expecting a good riding summer there, but the job went away and so did I.

Wouldn't envy you if you ended up living in Portland, sounds too much like Minneapolis. I've heard the Vancouver area is better, might want to check out the tax situation for that, Washington used to not have income tax, don't know if that's still true.
