My first Harley was a Sportster. I loved that bike! Wish I still had it, it pretty much did everything I wanted. I got the Street Glide to get a few more creature comforts. I love these as well. But I do agree that a Sporty may be a bit top heavy to start learning on. But people ride what they want. I agree with you Moldy.... people need to learn braking techniques. That is how I dropped my bikes, due to that last second stop (not an emergency, just that final grip on the front brake) a bit of loose gravel and a not straight front wheel. And all my bikes have had engine guards, the last two also had bag guards.
